A Music Niche

10 of my favourite songs

This weeks playlist is not necessarily cohesive but gives a flavour of my music tastes.

Space Cowboy (Stoned Again) - Jamiroquai

Jamiroquai was my favourite band growing up. As a bassist, I loved Stuart Zender, a magician on the bass and the band wasn't the same without him. This is my favourite version of the best Jamiroquai song out there.

Beneath the Surface - Incognito

I saw Incognito at the Barbican last night. They were absolutely incredible, well worth going to see if you can manage to get tickets. An excellent song from their breakthrough album - god bless Giles Peterson.

At The River - Groove Armada

A song with some special memories for me. Rediscovered after seeing Folamour live and sparked a trip hop revival. Easily one of their best songs.

Blanket (feat. Imogen Heap) - Urban Species

A niche one here, I haven't met anyone who has heard of Urban Species. This whole album is amazing, full of excellent acid jazzy tunes and thought provoking lyrics.

Who The Fuck Are The Arctic Monkeys - Arctic Monkeys

A classic for anyone who listened to Arctic Monkeys at 16. They were the coolest band with some unique bass/drum lines.

Turiya and Ramakrishna - Alice Coltrane

Spiritual Jazz was always referred to as 'Dad's Crazy Music' when I was younger. I wouldn't be so dismissive now. Her music takes you on journey to a different plane of existence. I highly encourage everyone to give it a listen.

Almost Lost Detroit - Gil Scott-Heron

Gil Scott-Heron had to be in my top ten. Some of the most funky, soulful politically conscious music out there - sadly all to applicable to the world of today.

Astral Travelling - Pharoah Sanders

I'm glad I grew up listening to so much spiritual jazz. I managed to see Pharaoh Sanders twice before he passed. His music is very special to me and this song needed to be in the top 10.

Music - LTJ Bukem

I grew up listening to Bukem's Earth series, an excellent mix demonstrating the extensive range of 90s liquid drum and bass. For me, this song encapsulates the whole genre and hearing it mixed into his live sets makes me very happy.

Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix

This song is just beautiful, Hendrix was a genius. The amount of emotion captured in just two minutes is incredible.

Happy Listening!

That's it for today. Hope you all enjoyed this journey into my music listening past and have an idea of what informed my tastes today.

Not sure if this format of embedding YouTube videos into the site works. If not, I may have to come up with another way of displaying the playlists.
